What is a home energy rating?

Simply put, it is a test conducted on your home using scientific equipment which gives you a number. This number can then be used to compare the energy efficiency of your home to other homes. For example, an energy star home has a "HERS" index number of 85.

Here's how the test works:

This is a "Blower Door" fan. It was developed by the Department of Energy to measure how "Leaky" or "Tight" a house is. It is a calibrated fan system that depressurizes the house and gives accurate measurements that yield a number. This number can be compared on the scale below to determine where your house stands compared to other standard numbers such as Energy Star homes.

Another piece of test equipment developed by the DOE is the "Duct Blaster" which is shown below.

This fan system checks your home's ductwork for leaks. Many homes are blowing heating and air conditioning dollars into the attic!
